ABSTRACT

The contents of this chapter are based on the material gathered during my sabbatical study, ‘The Mental Health Concepts in Indian Mythology’, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Bangalore, in 1987-8. The ancient texts studied were: the Vedas, the Upanisads, the Puranas, the Epics, the Jataka, the Jaina stories and The Ocean of Story. The material thus gathered consisted of stories (anecdotes) and dialogues/statements. I will use the word ‘story’ for both forms.
