We turned back for a whole day, but could not see or learn where you had gone. We were so grieved at it that we could not be merry for the rest of the voyage, believing that you were dead.' Giannetto told them 'A contrary wind got up in an arm of the sea and drove my ship plumb against a rock near shore, so that I escaped with difficulty, while everything else was overwhelmed.' This excuse Giannetto made in order not to reveal his fault.
