ABSTRACT

It is something of an enigma that the marginal productivity theory was not clearly developed alongside the theory of subjective value. It seems that, once the revolutionary concept of explaining the value of consumer goods in terms of marginal utility theory was developed, the next logical step would have been to explain how the values of the productive services themselves are determined. Yet, it was approximately 20 years later that secondgeneration marginalists developed the marginal productivity theory.
