Grassroots environmental movements in rural Greece

Critics of sustainable development insist that if it is to achieve its true goal, development should grow from within and rely on sustainable forms of resource use. Simultaneously, it should foster local control over resources, participation in decision-making and empowerment for local people, more especially the underprivileged and marginalized (Thrupp 1989, 1990; de la Court 1990; Gow 1992).
