Our primary interest in this chapter is focus on changes in employment patterns since 2011, to share the experience of women in management, and tell the story behind the numbers. To set the stage we will offer an overview of national data on education, employment by sector and employment conditions, as well as salary and compensation. We will also take the time to assess national data on women’s advancement within the workplace. In our look at women’s progress up the hierarchy, we pay particular attention to obstacles to the advancement for middle managers and the state of women at the corporate and executive level. To conclude this section, we will also discuss some promising recent initiatives to improve the work lives, roles, and retention of women in management.
