ABSTRACT

Introduction Inscription on the World Heritage List brings with it considerable changes relating to the meaning, organization and management of a heritage site. This book deals with the evolutions that take place before, during and after inscription, even several years later and not only concerning the site per se but also within the wider socio-cultural context in which it operates. It analyses the complex and interconnected system of players who both orchestrate and experience the changes that emerge with World Heritage designation and examines the supportive or conflictual processes that take place because of inscription on the World Heritage List.
