ABSTRACT

This account of the emergence of Local 229 of the United Automobile Workers is based on a lengthy and detailed collaboration with Edmund Kord, the president of the local during most of its first eighteen years. Because there is little documentary evidence bearing directly on the history of this local,1 I have had to rely almost entirely on Kord’s memory. For this reason I think I owe the reader an explanation of the nature and extent of these discussions and communications with Kord, so that the limitations of this study will be clear.
