ABSTRACT

In most cases, the goal, or one of the goals, of language processing is to extract information from what one is reading or listening to. This information is about the real world or an imaginary world, and not about the linguistic forms that are used to convey that information. The process of converting linguistic inputs into representations of parts of the real world, or of an imaginary world, is a complex process. In this chapter, we focus on one aspect of that process: the understanding of anaphoric expressions and, in particular the case of definite pronouns.
