ABSTRACT
In social theory the word ‘culture’ becomes an extra resource to be wheeled in after other explanations are defeated. It is the flexible, powerful residual factor where other reason fails. It works because of what it can say implicitly, drawing upon the reserves of understanding created by discourse in the regular culture. However, because it remains implicit it is the weakness at the core of the so-called social sciences.
