ABSTRACT
The theme of this conference, ‘From the diversity of languages to the unity of language’, could equally serve as the theme for generative grammar throughout its forty-year development. From the start, the central generativist research project has been to extract unity from diversity, to uncover those principles of organization common to all of the 5,000-odd languages of the world.
