ABSTRACT

In Thursday’s Child we found the private agony of a woman in a small town, taking refuge in the success of her public role of shop owner. This public role helped her to cope for she must be superwoman or die in the attempt. Her final refuge is in psychotic breakdown. An aspect of Carol’s life which contributes to who she is and her eventual fate is that she is the victim of taboos within the family. There are rules as to who she can be, what can be talked about, especially with her mother. The greatest taboo is to try to find out who her father is; to have knowledge of her inheritance.
