ABSTRACT

It has been said that all therapy could be seen as being about mourning, of one kind or another. Life is a constant flow of leavetaking and moving on, but how well we deal with this and truly accept loss and so become free to gain is another matter. This is the case in therapy; we are faced with patterns which, though they might have impeded us, are known and safe, whereas the unknown is an uncharted place. Even the maps provided by others’ experience cannot truly tell us our own way. It is often a frightening time when inner chaos attends the process of change.
