ABSTRACT

The presence of international faculty within higher education institutions and systems around the world is an important dimension of higher education in the global knowledge society of today. The increased global competition for talent, research, funding, and reputation/profile/branding implies that universities compete not only for the best and brightest of undergraduate and graduate students, but also for talented researchers and teachers on a world scale. Indeed, the ratio of international faculty to domestic faculty is one of the indicators in the international rankings of universities, an illustration of the importance of-as well as the strong driving forces motivating-international faculty mobility. But while there is much research on international student mobility, we know little about faculty mobility, which provides the central rationale for this study.
