ABSTRACT

In the education of young children, teaching and care are inseparable, both being the responsibility of the class teacher. In the secondary school, pupils are taught by many different subject specialists but are in the care of one ‘form teacher’. Forms consist of about 30 pupils, fewer in independent schools. They are grouped into larger divisions: usually horizontally in year groups, or sometimes vertically, in houses. The work of form teachers is coordinated by a year or house head. A deputy head is often in overall charge of the care system.
