ABSTRACT
Hungary was the first country in Eastern Europe-with the exception of Yugoslavia-to follow the path of privatization. It was also the first country in Eastern Europe where the Communist Party had the most significant losses in the first free election. Possibly traces of a pre-war tradition of democracy and a functioning market have survived in Hungary.
