ABSTRACT

Working alone is no unusual feature of museum careers. Even in larger institutions, departmental managers are often singletons, with their principal management task being of themselves. Smaller museums may have just one member of professional staff, expected to undertake a range of duties embracing those of curator, conservator, teacher, academic, designer, shopkeeper, public relations officer, accountant, lawyer, caterer, impressario-and sometimes even drudge and bouncer!
