ABSTRACT
The chapter falls into three parts, beginning with a brief survey of the political status of island microstates and of those island territories which are not fully independent, both within and outside the Commonwealth. This is followed by discussion of internal political structures and the relative stability of the governments of Commonwealth small island states. The third section of the paper focuses on the vulnerability of those states to external pressures and threats.
