ABSTRACT

Public concern about environmental issues increased significantly during the 1980s. Urban issues have not been high on that agenda, but concern has been expressed, particularly in London, over the increasing impact of traffic (see Chapter 4), while the desire to protect the surrounding countryside and to a lesser extent to ‘green the city’, by protecting open space, particularly ‘wild’ space, providing new spaces and cleaning up the street environment has obtained a higher profile.
