ABSTRACT
Amongst the many effects of the globally growing concern about environmental problems are the rising expectations placed in contemporary science. Once the inherently social nature of environmental problems is acknowledged it is evident that they present a great challenge to social science, too. However, owing to its hitherto modest presence in public debate, the question may arise whether social science actually is in the position to offer policy-relevant contributions.
