ABSTRACT

In the organization where I worked, my job as a counsellor involved seeing people who come to seek help because they couldn’t manage on their own.

Psychodynamic counselling for me means to be aware of what each client brings in their unique and particular history to the session. No matter how bizarre this external reality may look, psychodynamically I have to be aware and to ‘see’ beyond this, which means working with the unconscious to get in touch with the inner feelings they bring to the session, to try to understand the best way I can how they may be feeling, and at the same time be able to maintain a distance. It also means that I don’t reassure, give advice or have any physical contact, and I maintain boundaries.
