ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION This chapter is about some of the emotional reactions that arise among those who find themselves in a country and culture with which they are unfamiliar. These reactions are usually termed ‘culture shock’, a term which in general has a negative connotation, associated with feelings of unfamiliarity and alienation. The material is based on the experiences of employees working for an organization with branches worldwide and has been collected by one of the staff members responsible for the welfare of employees and their families overseas. This chapter will also consider the organization’s part in helping to allay or exacerbate anxiety in those it sends overseas.
