ABSTRACT

The evidence of glacial/interglacial cycles within the Quaternary sedimentary record of the Potwar plateau and adjacent areas of northern Pakistan is reviewed. Thermoluminescence (TL) dating of the loess deposits of the Potwar provides a chronology for the late Pleistocene and enables comparison with the record from deep-sea cores from the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. The record of loess deposition and preservation is used to infer changes in the degree of penetration of the southwest monsoon into the northern part of the subcontinent during the late Quaternary.
