ABSTRACT

The first part of this chapter is concerned with the demands generated by substantial changes in the role of head of department. One major change has resulted in departmental heads becoming involved in management responsibilities for the work of the staff in their departments while still being required to carry a heavy teaching programme. The second part of the chapter discusses the pressures on pastoral care heads arising from their wide range of duties, which includes being responsible for pupils’ discipline, pupils’ problems and liaison with external agencies as well as having to teach for much of the week. Heads of houses and heads of year are also experiencing increased levels of stress themselves but they also have to cope with the stress being felt by their colleagues.
