ABSTRACT

In this chapter I shall support the argument that role conflict and role ambiguity are major sources of stress for staff. When teachers have pastoral care responsibilities as well as a teaching load these demands can lead to stress if they clash, for example a girl wants to talk to her tutor about a personal problem (a suspected pregnancy) when he is on his way to teach a sixth-form physics class. Role conflict is also experienced by teachers because they are aware of the expectations of parents, the media, LEAs and HMIs.
