ABSTRACT

Theology ‘in the dogmatic mode’ represents the crowning achievement of the whole theological enterprise. While the alternative expression ‘Systematic Theology’ brings out the feat of conceptual organization involved in dogmatics, it does not convey the overriding intention that is intrinsic to dogmatics, namely to offer an authoritative and normative statement of Christian truth. To what extent the authority and normative status of dogmatics can be preserved in our relativistic and pluralistic age is a fundamental question that we shall need to consider.
