ABSTRACT

This chapter explores Phenomenon of 'Letting Go' (PLG) in the creative process of designers. It explains two major approaches, hermeneutic phenomenology and transcendental phenomenology. Both the approaches differ in terms of methodological approaches as well as in their philosophy. Amongst the various methods of Transcendental Phenomenology, the chapter finds Heuristic Inquiry propounded by Clark Moustakas to be most appropriate for gaining an understanding of PLG. The stages of achievement of PLG owe its rich and comprehensive results to the Transcendental Phenomenological Method of Heuristic Inquiry. Moustakas's heuristic enquiry offers a structured sequence involving seven phases of inquiry: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, creative synthesis, and validation. The course of Heuristic Inquiry is the self-journey of the researcher. The chapter focuses on the researcher's journey through the heuristic inquiry. The domain of Phenomenology opens up a gamut of approaches to qualitative research for the researcher.
