In Spenser’s poetry, trees embody symbolic meanings drawn generally from classical mythology, emblem books, biblical commentary, and contemporary medical literature, though there are a few specific sources (see *plants). In The Faerie Queene, trees are used in several ways: in epic catalogues, for their emblematic meanings, for their heraldic significance, as devices to identify poetic landscapes, and for the conventions associated with them.
