ABSTRACT

The story of Turpine and Blandina, enemies of courtesy, is strategically placed in two episodes near the center of FQ VI. Although Calidore will eventually capture the Blatant Beast, his surrogate Calepine is first defeated by Turpine, who is subsequently conquered by Arthur. These two discrete narratives (iii 27-iv 8 and vi 18-vii 27) together illustrate a major obstacle to civility and the difficulty of overcoming it.
