Latin Simples: ii, in sent10. L sentire, to feel, hence to discern by the
senses, has the extant presp sentiens, o/s sentient-, whence E sentient, and app the lost presp ·sentens, o/s sentent-, whence sententia, an impression (of the mind), an opinion, hence a statement, esp a legal verdict or a gram sentence: whence OF-F sentence (orig legal), adopted by E; derivative MF-F sentencier yields 'to sentence' (to prison). The derivative LL adj sententialis, in the form of a sentence, esp gnomic, becomes E sentential; derivative L sententiosus becomes MF-F sentencieux, f -ieuse, and E sententious.
