Tory, orig an evicted Irishman turned highwayman (the political sense arising only in the late 1670's), derives from the Ir 10ruldM, lit a pursuer but used for a robber, a 'wanted' man: cf OIr lorachl, pursuit. In those two Ir words, the base is lor-: cfEIr loir, pursuit, a body of troops, and Oa loir, pursuit, a band of pursuers.
