The subject of soccer violence is, of course, a very timely one. That is the case not least because, as we are repeatedly told by the media these days, the game’s reputation has been tarnished in a number of countries in recent years by the ‘hooligan’ behaviour, not only of spectators but also of players. Indeed some commentators have written as if the game is caught up in a self-destructive trend towards spectator indiscipline and violence. But let us become more concrete.
