ABSTRACT
The development of British cities in the course of the 1980s can be described through a series of seeming contradictions, such as those between urbanism and anti-urbanism; Europeanization and Americanization; regeneration and further decline; public and private space; the new interest in active citizenship and the erosion of local autonomy.
