ABSTRACT

CHAPTER 5 Teaching Dance on Film and Film Dance

BETH GENNfi

In a perfect world, we could take our students to see live performances of the dance we study in class. But for the vast majority of us this is just not possible. Even in major dance centers like London and New York, the repertory on view does not always fit the needs of the classroom. We must rely on film, video, and, more recently, digital imagery to “illustrate” dance studies. In this chapter, Til take a look at both the potential and the problems of using the moving image in the university classroom. And I’ll offer some strategies that I’ve found to be especially effective, inside and outside, of the classroom. Of course, in time, you will develop your own.
