ABSTRACT
Before the 1990s there was a limited choice of drug treatments available for patients with epilepsy. Carbamazepine and phenytoin were used mainly for treating patients with partial seizures, while sodium valproate was the drug of choice for primary generalized epilepsies. Other treatment options included phenobarbital, primidone, ethosuximide and the benzodiazepines.
