ABSTRACT
If American industries can dramatically improve their effectiveness through the application of TQM principles, would similar improvements result if education adopted the same approach? Are TQM concepts applicable to the unique environment of higher education? If so, what about specific TQM techniques? Can such techniques be applied without compromising traditional academic values, such as academic freedom? In sum, can higher education learn from the factories?
