ABSTRACT

I have always said that free association is the privilege of the patient, and not the analyst. Every moment of every session we face conundrums. What to confront, and what to silently contain, is one of them. Helping less experienced clinicians develop the courage this takes requires us to give full respect to how difficult this task is, without oversimplifying it in any way, or privileging one side of the conundrum over the other.
