There have been many definitions of this modern geography. I do not propose to try to add another, nor to indulge in verbal niceties about its scope. For there is an alternative method of appreciating its content, and that is not to enumerate what it contains, but to examine the intellectual environment in which it has grown up. (H.C.Darby)1

Tant qu’il s’agissait d’une géographie ‘tout court’ comme dit Vidal, s’occupant naturellement et largement de l’homme…—point de difficultés, point de conflits, point de périls. Du jour où on a prétendu créer de toutes pièces une science autonome baptisée géographie humaine; du jour où on a ainsi introduit officiellement l’homme dans la place, de ce jour les difficultés sont nées. Philosophiques, si je peux dire, et méthodiques.
