ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the application of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to the potential of the media as a mechanism that venues emancipatory discourses to catapult ideological transformation and democratic social change. Discourse, ideology, and power in the media, as oppressive systems, maintain the status quo and control people’s ideologies and their perspectives. This chapter analyzes and critiques the discourse of Suli Breaks-a young male in the media-on his position regarding school and education through CDA, an approach that helps reveal the linkages among discourse, ideology, and power.
