ABSTRACT

Research, knowledge and policy on issues related to small arms and light weapons (SALW) have advanced greatly since the mid-1990s, when a relatively small cluster of organizations and individuals started to combine to establish the SALW issue area internationally in its contemporary form. The feld of research, and practice on SALW issues, have passed relatively rapidly through several broad phases of development; and some stocktaking is timely once again. This chapter aims to examine issues and priorities for SALW-related research, building inter alia on the previous chapters of this book and complementing the adjacent chapter by Ambassador Jim McLay. This present chapter identifies and discusses priorities for future SALW-related research, in the context of the current international policy environment as well as the state of research and knowledge.
