ABSTRACT
In Southeast Asia, the process of Islamization is deemed unfinished. Rulers and the people have been open to new ideas, Islamic, Western, or otherwise, and appropriated these within their local cultures. Responding to colonial modernity and Islamic reform, many formed either modernist or traditionalist organizations and networks.
