ABSTRACT

Today’s society is a society on the move. People go to work, to school, or to the shopping mall, they travel for business, for tourism, or for visiting friends and relatives, they move to another neighborhood, another town, or another continent in search of better opportunities in life. With the development of mass automobility and, more recently, aeromobility, the scale of travel has grown immense, and social life and social organization are increasingly dependent on mobility (Adey, 2010; Urry, 2007). This is an important challenge for social scientists with an interest in place and place attachment. What happens to people’s emotional bonds with place in a highly mobile society?
