ABSTRACT
Ten years ago, Cataloging & Classification Quarterly published a special issue entitled Languages of the World: Cataloging Issues and Problems (Vol. 17, No. 1/2). Among the many issues relating to bibliographic control and access to documents published in a variety of languages was that of bilingual subject access. At that time, the principal challenge for some libraries was to ensure bilingual access to collections for language minorities in particular countries including Canada. Two articles dealt with the aspect of subject access and gave different perspectives on bilingual access to collections: the first related to the successful application of the bilingual cataloging policy of the National Library of Canada in using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Canadian Subject Headings (CSH) with the French-Canadian list Répertoire de vedettes-matière (RVM),1 while the second paper advocated a wider usage of Bilindex, a bilingual Spanish-English subject headings list for providing subject access in Spanish in American libraries.2
