ABSTRACT

Pulmonary gas exchange (PGE) variables include oxygen uptake (SO2) and carbon dioxide output (SCO2). However, variables representing ventilation, for example expired minute ventilation (SE), and derived variables, for example respiratory exchange ratio, will also be considered in this chapter. Gas exchange variables are routinely measured at rest or during exercise to determine the following:

resting metabolic rate work efficiency or economy maximal oxygen uptake gas exchange thresholds gas exchange kinetics.
