ABSTRACT
In this chapter I intend to discuss briefly the psychoanalytic concept of defence mechanisms, and restrict myself to an examination of only two of these, with particular reference to art therapy. Psychoanalytic theory holds that the unconscious mind exerts a dynamic effect on behaviour, known as psychic determinism, and that all behaviour is motivated and goal directed.
