ABSTRACT

In the twenty-first century, shifting workplace demographics, globalization, and the flattening of the world via new communication technologies has ushered in radical changes in our understandings of organizations and their members. At an individual level, organizational members—full-time employees, volunteers, and temporary workers—face new changes and challenges around key issues such as work-life ‘balance’ and personal and professional identities. Scaling up a level, exciting and oftentimes perplexing new realities have produced entirely new industries and positions vital to today’s global economy. Finally, around the world communities contend with the role of organizations—nonprofit, governmental, and corporate—in society, challenged by ever-increasing expectations on corporate social responsibility and sustainability. In short, the boundaries of organizations have stretched.
