ABSTRACT

Greece of the 1970s junta and her sexual encounters with a young GreekAmerican soldier Don Tsambalis. While the Greek-American author depicts the woman’s adventures in diverse Greek locations, she presents her heroine’s gradual liberation from her previous roles of widowhood, motherhood, age, and sex. However, when the love a air and Don’s suspicious moves attract the attention of the all-powerful junta police, Cora is imprisoned in a remote ancient fortress in the Peloponnese. There she reaches her ultimate transformation, depicted through the literal peeling of her skin and her turning into an empowered woman. The novel concludes with Don’s uncalled-for liberation expedition, since the heroine has already conquered her freedom with her strong will and courage.
