If you are

using it to get your way, to win;

using it with anger in any of its mild or severe forms;

using consequences to impose demands rather than as a teaching/learning tool;

calling it a logical consequence when it has no connection at all to the misbehavior: and/or

using it without first discussing it with the student or students and winning their agreement to its appropriateness.

Hold the discussion either in a one-on-one discussion or during a class discussion.
