ABSTRACT

As discussed in Chapter 5 and Chapter 6, there are four different modes of global connection and four different types of local transformation, which have been elaborated in both their typologies and their operational definitions for both concepts (See Tables 5.1, 6.1 and Figures 3.2, 6.1). What are the relationships between the two? Put another way, does a different mode of global connection produce a different impact upon local transformation? (Please take a look at the last column, “Impact on local transformations,” in Table 5.1: Operational Definitions of Global Connections, and the last column, “Impacted by Global Connections,” in Table 6.1: Operational Definitions of Local Transformation). The evidence presented in this book suggests that the answer is yes. To help readers clearly understand what the relationship is between these two in terms of “impact” and “impacted,” we created the “Matrix of Impact level of global connections on local transformation (a hypothetical model)” (Figure 7.1), in which the level of impact of global connections, from “lowest impact” to “highest impact” (see the row with an arrow; also refers to Table 5.1) and the level of local transformation from “not difficult impacted” to “most difficult impacted” (see the column line with an arrow, also refers to Table 6.1), are displayed. In each cell of the matrix, combinations of “impact” with “impacted” are shown in varying shades of grey, from dark grey, moderate grey, light grey, to no grey, indicating “best combined,” “good combined,” “bad combined,” and “worst combined” respectively. One can see that “a tight-near mode” of affiliated connection” has “best combined” for all four types of local transformation, whereas “a loose-far mode” of virtual connections only has its “best combined” on “external-material type” of local transformation, with a gradually reducing impact upon the rest.
