ABSTRACT
In his fascinating novel, Angle of Repose, Wallace Stegner, commenting upon a story by his heroine Susan Ward, writes: "It was as if Mr. [Henry] James should write a dime novel."
It would have been almost as appropriate in the context and setting of Stegner's narrative if he had written: "It was as if Miss Louisa May Alcott had written a dime novel."
