ABSTRACT

The critically important first step in ADHD-focused couple therapy is educating the couple about ADHD and its treatment strategies. As couples begin to re-frame longtime difficulties through the new ADHD lens, they become better able to shift their focus from confusion, conflict, and the “blame game” to identifying each partner’s contributions to the continuing problems, adopting evidence-based change techniques, and gaining confidence in their ability to improve the quality of their lives and their relationship. Gradually, this shift promotes intimacy and helps mutual positive regard to flourish once again.
